The bulk of Australia’s rice is grown in the Murrumbidgee and Murray valleys of NSW. Producing up to one million tonnes of rice per year, Australia’s rice growers play an important role in ensuring food security for our nation.

Since its establishment in the early 1900s, the Australian rice industry has employed thousands of people across the country, making a significant impact on the economic health of the regions in which it’s grown. Some of these towns include Leeton, Deniliquin and Coleambally in NSW.

The work for rice harvest commences in January when there is plenty of activity in preparation for the actual harvest which starts in mid-March when large rice receivals begin. The rice harvesting season usually goes through until May/June.

The roles

Rice harvesting is much like grain harvesting, involving exceptional rates of pay in return for busy work and long days. The main difference is that most rice processing is completed indoors in a state-of-the-art processing plant. Rice harvest also offers exceptional pay rates along with a great team environment.

Our client also provides all PPE for staff.

Some of the jobs include:

  • shed and pit operators
  • grain testers
  • weighbridge staff
  • appraisal staff
  • hygienists

Rice harvest involves working 8-12 hours per day, 6-7 days per week (weather pending), with a pay rate of $31.62 per hour plus overtime and penalty rates (higher pay rates are on offer for returning staff).
